John Wilhelm creates incredible photographs with his family that blew me away with their imagination and humor. John, who lives in Switzerland, regularly includes his partner, Judith, and their three young daughters – Lou, Mila and Yuna – in his photo projects. “I love to bring my fantasy to life with the help of my own images and Photoshop,” says John. “It’s more an obsession than plain passion. I call myself a photoholic.”
Limit patterns.
Not only do some patterns cause lens distortion, but having strong or bold patterns may also be distracting to the whole image Think classic. Like the Antonio Family display here, they went with a classic, timeless style. These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel. Say no to characters. Yes, your little one may love their Toy Story shirt but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be pretty distracting. Look for clothing collections. When shopping for clothes for kids, head to stores that typically have color coordinating collections. You can then purchase clothes for all the children from one store. You then know their clothes will coordinate. Choose 1-3 colours for your group portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and have everyone work within that colour palette. Shoes matter! Choose dark socks and footwear (unless it’s a barefoot photo on the beach) because white just sticks out like a sore thumb and that’s all you’ll notice in your portrait. Textures. Try to incorporate some textures in your overall style. A way to achieve this is by layering and incorporating different materials and accents. Textures like, velvet, wool, tweed, lace, hand knitted items, embroidery details, denim & leather. These details create added depth and are especially vibrant in black and white images.
