Last month I agreed to do a pro bono photo shoot for Assistance Dogs New Zealand. This sitting was not your average photo shoot, as the subjects were three autistic children and their very special helper dogs. I suppose I would describe these beautiful animals as guardian angels for autistic children, providing a friend/companion who is loving, loyal, obedient and who loves them unconditionally, but also provides the parents with a second pair of hands and eyes.
I have and continue to photograph autistic children at several of Wellingtons Kindergarten and childcare centres and use my favoured approach to the photography of these unique children (patience, patience, patience). Thankfully we are now operating from a large natural light studio, which provides a lighting and stand free environment for all of the younger children to run around in, obstacle free, and believe me we used every inch of our studio space for this shoot. It was a great environment to see the dogs actually working, as they provided an anchor to where we needed the children to stand and the children just did what they did naturally, exploring the environment, cuddling, holding the dogs and following them around wherever we needed them to be.
All these smiles were genuine and we got some great images for Assistance Dogs NZ, all because of these wonderful dogs and their trainer Julie Hancox. – - – http://www.assistancedogstrust.org.nz

I recently photographed kiwi actor Melanie Lynskey for New Zealand’s Woman’s Day magazine. Melanie is a warm, kind and friendly down to earth kiwi girl, very cool to think how much she has achieved in the Hollywood scene. We had fun taking the photos at Wellington’s boutique Hotel Ohtel, the best little Hotel in Wellington.

Just before Christmas I photographed Allblack Cory Jane and his wife Amy for the Woman’s Day magazine. I was lucky enough to photograph the family a year earlier, so it was nice meet them again a year on and I hope I will be lucky enough to photograph them again when baby number three arrives. Cory very kindly donated an Allblack training jersey for our Special Olympics quiz night this year. Pretty much an all round great guy.

Well, I have just been away for a week and popped in to the studio space to check on its progress. Wow is all I could say. Things are really taking shape there now and you can get more of a feel for the space because of the walls giving us the shape/outline of what we imagined. We are getting very excited.

Recently I had the enjoyable job of photographing Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie at their Wellington home for the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly. I have photographed Miranda at home before, however this was the first time I had the pleasure of photographing Stuart too. The shoot coincided with the National tour of their show Biography of my Skin, an entertaining and astute production receiving rave reviews. You can see from the photos Miranda and Stuart don’t take themselves too seriously; I particularly like the image co-starring one of their chooks. This is one funky couple.

One of the perks of being a photographer is meeting a variety of people from all walks of life, and even being able to peek inside their lives. Recently Penny had the opportunity to photograph Mark Paston and his family for the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly. Mark had recently returned with the All Whites from their hugely successful campaign at the football World Cup in South Africa. Mark and his wife Amy have a wonderful little boy, Jack, and the two hours spent with them was relaxed and fun. Not only is Mark an exceptional goalie but he is also a humble and generous man, kindly donating his anthem jacket (and signing a football) for the local Special Olympics basketball team, where Penny is a volunteer. Many thanks to Mark and family!

Earlier this year we updated all of Brandons staff photos. The results and can now be viewed on their updated website Brandons Lawyers.. It was a great chance to take environmental portraits in a variety of Brandons offices and board rooms, utilising light and space.
